The Petrel Case. Auckland, July 17. The Petrel case in which Captain Reid and Foley the mate of an American whale ship are charged with wilful murder on the high seas, closed to-day. The R.M.. as Commissoner under the extradition Act held that the charge was not sustained and discharged the prisoners. Under the treaty there is no power to extradite prisoners charged with brutality or even manslaughter. Attempted Suicide Alien nr Bryce, aa unmarried woman of middle age, cut her throat with a razor at the North Shore tnis morning. She has shown signs of mental aberration. She will probably recover. Champion Copper Mine. Nelson July 17.
A largely attended meeting of shareholders In the Champion Copper Company Was held last night, the object of which was to consider means by which the working of the mine might be carried no. Il|was resolved that a new Company should be formed with the object of thaking over the old Champion Company B mine. The scheme is to float a new Company with a clpital of twenty thousand, shareholders in old Company to become shareholders In New to the extent of amount they would have to pay under liquidation of present Company.
Theft. Chbistcudkch, July 17. Yesterday afternoon the house of Mr George Hall, Papanui, was en'ered during the absence of the family, and two boxes belonging to his daughter, Mrs E. Wakefield, containing jewellery and documents were stolen. They were in a room, the door of which was left open. Some jewellery belonging to Mias Graham in the same room was undisturbed, A servant girl was in the bouse at the time but she was in a kitchen, remote from the room entered and neither saw tot heard anyone about * Labor Council. At a meeting ct the Trades and Labor Council last night, great dissatisfaction was expressed at Government and the Auckland member for neglecting to provide relief works far the unemployed in this district. It was-also resolved to take action to have New Zealand Railways servants put on an equal footing with those of x ictoria and New South Wales, with regards to wages.- holidays, etc Grant the president of the Council, has gone to Hokianga, to inspect land set apart for special homestead eetdement,
