Arson.
Auckland, July 10
Mr Justice Gillies this morning pawed a sentence of 7 years penal servitude on George Mccaslin, convicted of arson at Newton. Ho said the evidence left no doubt as to the guilt of either the piisoner or his w,fe. The prisoner protested his innocence and said his great fault had been love of drink. A Sad Occurrence.
At the inquest on the body of the boy Taylor, burnt to death at Mount Eden, a verdict of accidentally burned was returned. Mrs Taylor received aero us burns while endeavouring to save the child. At '.he Inquest she fainted twice while giving evidence Killed. W. Slater, settler at Okeabau, was killed yesterday by a ! rse falling on him. The Petrel Case. The police have been all called away to Hawera to remove a lot of Nat. ves who have squatted upon some land belonging to Mr Lysaght at Mokoia, and cominei cjd building there. The trespassers had been warned off but they treated the notice with indiffoiei c •, snying that Europeans were using their land and they had to occupy tho pakeha’a.
