We have been requested to state that a priest from Melbourne will preach at the Catholic Church on Sunday next.
The Ashburton bounds met at Caitnbrae yesterday. The weather was not,favorable lor scent, but the country was excellent and three very good runs, from three to four miles each, were obtained. Among the followers were Mrs Rowse, Messrs Upton, Russell, Helmore, Alington, Bowyer, G. Aynsley, Rowoe, Cun. ningham, W. U. Allen, and Moore. Mr Alington again entertained the visitors in a most hospitable manner, and the residents in the neighborhood appeared to vie with one another in their efforts to make the gathering a success. The Club is largely Jindebt-'d to its Methven and Cairnbrae members for the cordial manner in which they have always exerted themselves to forward its interests.
The usual monthly sitting of the Ashburton District Court will be held at 9.30 a.m tomorrow. The master of the Old Men’s Home will be glad to receive any old clothing lor the use of the inmates.
The hotelkeepers of Christchurch, says the Lyttelton Times, have agreed to abide by the spirit of “ The Licensing Act Amending Act, 1882,” and close their houses at 11 o'clock, in terms of the licenses granted by the Licensing Committees—not taking advantage of Mr Beetham’s decision in the Terminus Hotel case, that any extension of time after 10 p.m must be to midnight.
The nest of the St Stephen’s series of popular entartainments will be held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The full programme will ho advertised in our next issue.

The meeting summoned iu Chrialohuro for yesterday afternoon to devise means Lr raising subscriptions for the relief of those who have been ruined by the volcanic eruptions, did not take place, owing to the paucity of attendance.
At a meeting of the Dunedin Harbor Board yesterday, a communication was received from the German Consul, on behalf of the German Government, asking for the charges and port dues which would be levied on steamers of from 3500 to 3000 tons stopping in the port from a week to ten days, running in connection with the New German line. The information was supplied.
A telegram received from Dunedin last nigh* says the Mayor to-day spoke very plainly to said ho was disgusted with the behavior of the unemployed who waited upon him. He some of the men, who had not been very respectful because ho had been compelled to discharge some of them. He had noticed some of them drinking after the last pay-day, instead of keeping the money at home. They should remember they were receiving public money, and be reasonable in their demands. Ho then agreed to telegraph a resolution that three hundred men wore out of work, and with their familes, were on the verge of starvation.
Members of Caledonian Society and patrons of the annual Scotch concert will be pleased to learn that Miss Janet Currie, who has so often delighted them with her sweet rendering of the higher class Scottish songs, has given her hand to a deserving fellowcountryman. The nuptials were celebrated last week, and the happy man is Lieutenant John Reid, of the Christchurch Scottish Rifles. We join our good wishes to the happy pair with the good wishes of every Scotchman and Scotchwoman in the district.
