ERUPTION OF TARAWERA
Auckland, July 8,
There was a great blow up at Rotomahanu this morning, large columns of steam, mud, and stones being shot np to a height of 15,000 ft, lasting ten minutes. Some anx ety is felt for the safety of the exploring party in the vicinity. Te Whiti has sent a message to Rotorua to say ho may bo able to predict the next eruption. An earthquake was felt at Kotoiti, and one little tremor at Rotorua Tarawera appears very quiet, just a litt'e steam appearing over the hills The frost was severe last night, formingjice half-aa-inch thick.
Experiments made by Mr Kinross with volcanic dust collected from the deck of the Southern Croes bear out the test made by Mr Pond, of Auckland. The pure dust proved to have considerable fertilising powers, and, mixed with a little ordinary garden soil, gave a very good result. The experiments were undertaken at the instigation of Dr Hector.
