HAKATERE v. HAMPSTEAD.

TO TXiB EDITOR. Pin, —Your rei iarks in last night’s , Gtjakdian, re H . katere Town District, , are very just. So ne men have a craze for immortalizing ; hemaelves by attaching the name of their native village to the village founded In heir neighbourhood In this colony. Whe t the Town Board waa elected, instead of setting to work they set to squabble, and the intelligent portion of them were compelled, through self-respect, to resign. Of course there waa no one left who understood even the rudiments of clerical work. Strange as it may seem, the “ rump" immediately seized the opportunity to try and secure a nice little job by advertising for a clerk, who was, as “Ratepayer” justly remarks, not wanted. I trust the ratepayers will watch this little dodge and see that the “ tump ” do not thrust in their man, till, at least, there be a complete Board. Should they, however, appoint a clerk before the vacancies be filled up, the ratepayers may see that private and not public interests are studied. The interests of the ratepayers should be studied before those of any man, no matter how important residing In the district. The absurdity of trying to change the name of our district before any business whatever is got through must be patent to any man of common sense. Trusting that the “ rump ” will have the decency to pause in their present course. I am, etc.. County Mayo.
