An inspection parade of the Bifles and Guards will be held on Tuesday, July 27. The ordinary meeting of the Hampstead School Committee will be held on' Friday evening. The usual monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council will be held tomorrow, at the usual hour. It has been definitely decided to hold a Volunteer ball on Tuesday, July 27, and a joint Committee of the Bifles and Guards has been appointed to make arrangements. It is believed Colonel Bailey and Major Kewall will be preseat.

The usual monthly meeting of the Ashton School Committee was held on Monday evening. Present—Messrs G, Gilmour (Chairman), T. Taylor, J. Bell, J. Croy, W. Croy, J. Crosson, and J. Shearer. Correspondence was [read from the Board of Education with regard to several minor matters. The Master’s report showed a slight falling off in the attendance during the past month. Applications for the position of assistant mistress were 'received and considered, and that of MiaSiß. L. Ball selected for recommendation to the Board. The Committee then adjourned. The Kaiapoi Caledonian Society has reoog* nised an act of gallantary on] the part of a boy named James Forest, who endeavored to save another boy from drowning in the Waimakariri, a few mouths ago, by ordering him to be presented with a handsome silver medal.

steamer Wareatoa was thrown on the North Beach on Monday by a heavy sea, and is still in the same position. She is a considerable distance further northward than is usually the case.
