GOVERNMENT INSURANCE ASSOCIATION.
Wellington, June 21. The adjourned meeting of the Government Insurance Association this evening was well attended. Sir J. Vogel presided. The discussion of Mr Ball’s resolution— That it is desirable the business of the Association should be returned to the charge of the Government,” was resumed. The motion was put, with the following resultFor —Hands held up, 44 ; proxies, 72 ; total, 116, Against—Hands held up, 38 ; proxies, 20' ; total, 244 The motion was declared lost Messrs Dargaville and Shrimski demanded a poll. Mr Bell’s second motion, as follows,
was then pat;—“ 1. That the Board should be reduced to six members, of whom three should be elected and the other three should be the SolicitorGeneral, the Secretary to the Treasury, and either the Public Trustee or the Commissioner of Property Tax, three to be a quorum if the Chairman be present, or four if tho Chairman be not present. 2. That the Government appoint one of the members of the Board to be Chairman. 3 That each official member of the Board should receive an honorarium of 50 guineas, and each elected member should receive 100 guineas per annum, and the Chairman such sum in addition as the Board may fix, not exceeding £2OO. 4. That the nominated members shall cease
o be members of this Board on the day
the Act comes into operation, and shall not be re-appointed. 5. That power should be given to the Board at its option to grant compensation to officers on retirement, and make compassionate allowances to the widows and young children of officers who die whilst In the service. 6. That in case of any fre>h appointment of the Commissioner and Actuary, the power shall be exercised subject to approval of the Governor'” These were lost, and a poll demanded Mr Fisher then moved—“l. That the Central Board be reconstituted of sevoft members, four to bo elected by the policyholders and three to be nominated by the Government—the three nominated members not to be officers of the Government, 2. That the Board so reconstituted shall elect its own chairman 3. That the honorarium be fibred at £IOO for each member of the Board, except the Chairman of Directors, who will receive £2OO per annum.”
Ashowof hands was taken, as follows For—l 7, proxies 206; total, 223. Against—--14, proxies 66 ; total, 70. The motion was carried.
A poll was demanded, and Sir Julius intimated that the poll would take place this day four weeks. The meeting broke up shortly after eleven o’clock.
