ARRIVAL OF THE TONGARIRO.
Port Chalmers, June 21
The mail steamer Tongariro reached Port Chalmers at 5.30 p.m. yesterday. She brings 330 bags of mails and 6 baas from Capetown, 2003 tons cargo, and 212 passengers —20 first saloon, 70 second saloon, 122 steerage. She his 550 tons of cargo for Dunedin, 700 tons for Lyttelton, 4 tons for Wellington, and the balance for Auckland and intermediate porta. Excellent health has boon enj >yed by all on board. Concerts and theatrical performances have been got up.and divine service regularly held. Her actual steaming has occupied 38 days 10 hoars 40 minutes, at an average speed of 13 4 knots per hoar. The bear day’s work was 336 miles, and notwithstanding she has twice broken down since leaving Table Bay she came Into port two days in advance of her contract time. She left the Capa at II 5 a.m on May 28, and on the afternoon of the same day an accident occurred to her machinery through a flaw in the high pressure valve ring, which damaged the back valve and piston, but having spare gear and means at hand, the repairs were effected by Mr Waring, the Chief Engineer, after a detention of 50 hours, daring which time the ship was under sail, making from 4 to 7 knots per hour Thence, she went on steaming for two drys, when the high-pressure valve gave out again and caused another detention of 18 hours for repairs. These being effected, she came on in good style, and made Otago Heads in 18 days 13 hours 52 minutes actual steaming time, the average speed during that time being 13‘9 knots per hour. Great praise is due to Captain Bone, Mr Waring (tho Chief Engineer;, and the staff for the manner in which the repairs were effected in midocean.
