The Ashburton Guardian. Magna Est Veritas Et Prevalebit. MONDAY, JUNE 12. 1886. The Jubilee Year.

Yesterday Her Majesty the Queen entered upon the Jubilee year of her reign, and she has already received, even from this distant part of her realm, indications of the respect and reverence in which she is held by the people of her vast dominions. Fortynine years have elapsed since Queen Victoria was placed at the head of a democratic democracy, and the grace, wisdom, and discretion with which she has filled that difficult position have far surpassed the most sanguine hopes of the chivalrous statesmen who wel corned her to the throne in 1837. Space will not permit us to even mention the great social and political changes which have taken place during her beneficent reign, but the ready tact and dignity with which she has ascommodated herself and her Court to the force of public opinion, her regal, social, and domestic virtues have endeared her to a whole nation, and we feel that we are only echoing the unanimous wish of the people of this colony in expressing a hope that she may be long spared to enjoy the affection and esteem of her subjects.
