THE WAKANUI MILL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As I am the person specially interested in the Wakanui Mill, I cannot allow yoar report of the meeting held on the 16th inst. re river encroachment to pass unchallenged. Much to my surprise, instead of business re river encroachment, special notice was called to the mill race, which formed the sole topic of the evening. Had the convener of the meeting (Mr S. Brown) confined himself to river encroachment instead of meddling with the mill race there is no doubt ho would not have received the support ho did Whether it is through ignorance or to further his own ends by throwing dust in the eyes of the public I will leave it with those who voted with him. Referring to Mr E. Thomas, and bis assertion re my having received ”£4O for bringing water in,” I deny the truth of the statement, and challenge him to prove it and produce the said ratepayer lam willing to subscribe to any charitable institution the sum of £2 on Mr E. Thomas producing said ratepayer, providing he will forfeit a similar amount on the non-productien of same.

Alexander Pbotheboe. Ashburton, June 17, 1886.

[Gur correspondent evidently intends to challenge the statements made by various speakers at the meeting, not our reporter’s account of those statements. Ed G.]
