THE CENSUS.

The following table shows the population of the colony by electoral districts according to the new census. The figures are subject to revision but may be accepted as closely approximate to the actual number. Chatham Islands and shipping are included. The total will bo about 8000 below the estimate, chiefly owing to the impossibility of obtaining a list of people who leave the colony without prepaying their passages. The first column of figures gives the Population of each electorate, inclusive of Maoris and Chinese; the second the number of electors on the roll March :Ust, 1880
In this Island there are 1083 Chinese, mostly located on the West Coast and in Otago and Southland. The population of the North Island last census was 101,109; South Island, 290,800. The returns show an increase in the live years of 91,401, exclusive of Maoris and Chinese,
