Pressure on our space this evening necessitates the exclusion of leading matter. Tho ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council will be held on Monday evening.
The annual general meeting of members of the Ashburton Racing Club will be held this evening at tho Club’s room at 8 o’clock. Mr F.Ferriman has on view at bis premises in East street a collection of pictures which would well repay a visit of inspection. They are copies of famous pictures by some of the old masters, and many of the originals are in tho Dresden Gallery. Mr Ferrimau has within tho last few days disposed of several, and he invites a visit from ail who have a desire to inspect a really interesting collection. Mr F.Stephenson Smith, District Surveyor, reached Waian yesterday afternoon from St. James, bringing news that he had lost two membarsof his partythrough exhaustion,consequent on being overtaken by a severe snowstorm in the Upper Clarence Valley on the evening of the !Hh inst. Tho unfortunate victims were Mr L. Paske, a nephew of the Governor, and Mr H. J. Thompson of Richmond.
Thu ordinary meeting of the Ashton School Committee was held on Monday last. Present —Messrs G. Gilmour (Chairman), T. Taylor, J. Croy, Bell, Oropou, W. Croy and J, Shearer. A letter was read from the Board of Education asking, prior to granting sum asked for by the Committee, to be furnished with a plan of the school grounds, with existing line of fences. The Inspector's report was considered. It showed that thejisohool was well conducted, and the instruction given in bis presence to have been satisfactory. Some discussion ensued, with regard to the sewing lesson, and t|e Committee expressed the opinion that it would bo advisable in future to devote the stipulated time to this subject. Mies Ick, the assistant mistress, tendered her resignation, which was accepted. The master’s report having been considered, the Committee adjourned. Mr Mathew Burnett, the temperance advocate, is at present in Blenheim, where be is conducting his mission with great success. In Nelson Mr Burnett took nearly 600 pledges.
A considerable fall of snow took place at Eakaia on Wednesday night. At Bomerton the fall was much heavier tand the suow is still lying on the ground. Mr Glapcotl, the lecturer of the Government Inanranoe Association, addressed a fairly large audience at the Oddfellow’s Hall. Rakaia, last evening. The lecture was of an instructive and interesting character, and soma of the anecdotes related by Mr Clapcott provoked much merriment.
The following contributions towards the stipend fund of the Longbeach parochial district have ncen received since the publication of the last accounts: —Coldstream, £l6; Chatmos, £lO ; Lowclffe, £5. One of the most severe frosts yet registered in Ashburton occurred last night. The following thermometer readings have been supplied to us : —Alford Forest, Itsdeg., Fab.; Alfo’-d Station, 19deg.; Methven, 19deg. ; Ashburton ,*2Mog.
All the East Coast telegraph lines north of Wellington are down, and commnnication 1.1 therefore interrupted.
The Clerk of the Ashburton Resident Magistrate’s Court will attend at the Courthouse, Rakaia, on Wednesday, June 16, between the hours of 9.30 a.m. and 4.30
A meeting of the Wikanui School Committee was hold on Monday, All the members were present. The Inspector’s report upon the Main School was submitted, and considered satisfactory. The teachers' reports were read, and dealt with. The Chairman was directed to apply to the Board of Education for a grant for planting purposes, Mr Brown was authorised to have drainage done, and it was resolved—“ That the caretaker bo requested to have the fires kindled not than 9 a.m,, and that the doors be thrown open at that hour for the comfort of the scholars.” The Chairman reported that Mr Doake had been engaged as Secretary to tho Committee, Jand it was resolved to pay the Secretary a salary of £5
per annum. A letter was read from Board of Education, enclosing a petition from residents in the south-west pa-t of the district praying for the conatitution of a new school district. Mr Cole proposed, and Mr Cochrane seconded, that the prayer of the petitioners should be granted. As an amendment, Mr Brown proposed, and Mr Beadley seconded ; “ That the Committee
declines to make any recommendation, and therefore leaves the whole question to be
dealt with as tho Board may think fit,
On being put to the meeting, the amendment was carried, and tho Committee then ad-
journed.
All who wish Home Rule—The host and simplest way to settle Home Rule is to make your Home Rulers study well this issue of the “ Monthly Advertiser.” By so doing they will be able to regulate and rule their homo, at the least possible outlay.— [Auvt.]
