Melbourne, June 1
Tho Governor has received the following cablegram from tho Secretary of State for the CoVnuea :—“ New Heb idea.—ln reply to the Agent-General, I informed him that intimation had been given trance at the outset that it was extremely doubtful which proposal would be acceptable to tho Colonies. That Her Majesty’s Government intended to strictly adhere to tho pledge not to take any step without fully consulting the Colonies. Her Majesty’s Government thought the friendly proposals embracing a cossa'ion of transportation ought to be fully and carefully considered. Australian opinion is divided, but 1 did not anticipate any difficulty in a general consent such as would warrant Her Majesty’s Government in taking any steps. Despatches have not yet been received from all the Colonies, but private intimation has been given tho French Ambassador as to the probable result Formal reply has been deferred ponding the receipt of despatches.” Adelaide, Juno 1.
Although no rise has taken place in value, tho copper mining industry shows siifas of a roviial of trade. Sydney, Juno 1.
The break-up of tho drought has caused great rejoicing in Sydney. A very general downpour of rain has taken place in New South Wales and Queensland. Tho heaviest fall occurred in the Narrabri district, N.S.W., where it rained in such torrents that precautions were being taken against phenomenal Hood and loss of life.
