’ fPHK PRKBB ASSOCIATION. ■ F Railway Commission. , Aickland, June 4. I Sailed, s s. Botomahaua for Melbourne, , via Southern ports. S. Valle is r passenger to give evidence before the Railway Commission at Wellington. New Hebrides. The Hon Colonel Sargood, of Victoria, telegraphed yesterday morning to the Rev J. Robertson, stating that an important despaton had jual been received in Melbourne from Karl Granville on the subject of the New Hebrides, and asking for help to prevent the French claims being granted. A second cable message from Colonel Sargood, as follows, arrived last night .-—Granville’s despatch of April 22 covers a French official note declaring that the New Hebrides are wanted to secure native labor for their Pacific Islands. As this means slavery, surely New Zealand will never agree. In view of these messages It is probable a public meeting will be called for at an early date in opposition to the French proposals.
