The Auckland bootmakers estimate that the new tariff will increase the cost of production 7 per cent. The loss of the city through the strike is £I2OO, of which £IOO is wages, which men would have earned.

Roderick McGregor, a settler of Whangarei, suddenly assaulted •onstable McDowell, of the Water Police, to-day with a cudgel, under a delusion that the constable had been chasing him through the woods. MrGregor was medically examined, and sent to the Lunatic Asylum. The constable was severely hit on the head, and his fingers were bitten in arresting the lunatic, aided up another constable.
