Auckland, May 20
The Auckland bootmakers estimate that the new tariff will increase the cost of production 7 per cent. The loss of the city through the strike is £I2OO, of which £IOO is wages, which men would have earned.
Roderick McGregor, a settler of Whangarei, suddenly assaulted •onstable McDowell, of the Water Police, to-day with a cudgel, under a delusion that the constable had been chasing him through the woods. MrGregor was medically examined, and sent to the Lunatic Asylum. The constable was severely hit on the head, and his fingers were bitten in arresting the lunatic, aided up another constable.
Among the passengers by the s.s. Alameda are the Auckland Syndicate who went to Samoa in connection with the litigation Cornwall v McArthur. A case for appeal has been lodged
Wanganui, May 29.
Firman’s Hotel, at Aramoho, three miles from Wanganui, was burned down this morning. The proprietor was away shooting, and only two women wore on the premises, who had to get out of the windows. Nothing was saved. The insurances are as follows: Northern, £OOO on building and stock (£225 reinsured in the New Zealand); Colonial, £l5O on furniture
Wellington, May 30. The captain and officers of the Russian war ship were entertained at dinner on Saturday by the members of the Wellington Club.
