TINWALD TOWN BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Tiowald Town Board was held on Friday last. All the members were present.
surveyor's report.
The Surveyor reported :—Since last meeting the valuation roll for the district has been received from the Property Tax Commissioner, but as it did not come to hand in time for the ratepayers’ list to be compiled therefrom, within the period prescribed by the Town Districts’ Act, I have applied to the Colonial Secretary for an extension of time to June 15. Following instructions given at last meeting, I waited on the County Council with respect to the Main South road and Graham’s road. The Council distinctly declined to undertake any work in connection with footpaths, although I had, on behalf of this Board, offered to pay the cost of gravelling, if the Council would do the forming, from Mr Shearer’s to the bridge. The Council further stated that they were in communication with the Government as to their liability in respect of main roads, and that they also had some doubt as to whether the main road was not on the west side of the railway. On the latter point, having examined the maps and drawings in the Survey and Public Works Office, I am in a position to say that no road is shown on them on the west side of the railway from the bridge towards the Lagmhor road. The road formerly existing was taken for railway purposes. Under what authority this long frontage was taken from the adjoining properties I have not enquired, as the matter does not at present affect the interest of the Town Board. The County Council have shown an evident desire to shelve the question of maintenance of the maiu roads in the district, and these roads are falling rapidly ont of repair, some of the holes being quite sufficient to break springs of light vehicles, while for want of a little work in clearing side channels some of the houses are occasionally flooded. During the late rain in two or three places the water met on the crown of the roads. The Connell have been levying -a considerable snm for rates in the district, and the little work done was generally worse than useless; they were abont to levy another rate which from their present attitude will probably go to make wafer races through private properties outside this district. It would be manifestly to the advantage of the Town District to take over the main roads and deal .with them themselves if relieved of County rates, and there cannot be the least donbt that residents would much prefer paying even a special rate for the purpose of making their streets dry and safe, to paying their money away for the benefit of distant parts of the County. I would advise that the members of Parliament resident in the district be requested to use their influence in the direction of {giving Town fßoards the entire control of all roads within their districts, and of relieving such districts of the liability to pay County rates. The report was adopted, and it was resolved to forward the Surveyor’s recommendation to the members for the district.
MALCOLM STREET. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Houston, seconded by Mr Held, that the balance of grant be expended to best advantage in improving Malcolm street. A NUISANCE. It was decided to notify of a section to fill in a dangerous diton^^^^^p TENDERS. The following tenders ware accepted ; Contract No. 2, Lowe and Meharry, forming, 8s per chain; shingling, Is per yard; contract No. 3, R. Ennis, £l7B 7s 6d. After the transaction of routine business, the Board adjourned.
