TEMPERANCE MEETING.

Sir Wm. Fox and Mr T. W. Glover, both renowned temperance advocates, addressed a public meeting in the Town Hall last evening. Dr Trevor occupied the chair, and on the platform were the Beva D. McNicoll, T. W. Newbold, and J. Hill, and Mr J. W. Sawle. There was a large attendance. The Chairman briefly introduced both lecturers, and called upon Mr Glover to first address the meeting. Mr Glover, who was received with applause, spoke at some length, pointing out the evils of the drink traffic, and earnestly calling upon his hearers to put that traffic down with a strong band. He introduced into his lecture many little anecdotes, which were very well received. In conclusion, he stated that Sir Wm. Fox and himself appeared before thsm as delegates from the New Zealand Temperance Alliance, which was formed a few months ago. He explained the objects and principles of the Alliance, and”asked all temperance workers to become members; and all who had not done so to pledge themselves to total abstinence, and also join the Alliance.

A collection having been taken up, Sir Wm. Fox, who was received with prolonged applause, delivered a brief address. He considered the remedy for the existing depression lay in the observance of total abstinence. He also made an earnest appeal in favor of the New Zealand Temperance Alliance, and resumed his seat amidst applause. Votes of thanks to Sir Wm. Fox, Mr

Glover, and the Chairman were passed, and the benediction pronounced by the Bev. D. McNicoll brought the meeting to a close. At the conclusion a numbfer of pledges were taken, and it was announced that a meeting for the purpose of establishing a Temperance Benefit Society would be held at the Orange Hall on Friaay next.
