The Tenders

The result of the tenders for the Australian Federal mail service has been made public. The only two Companies applying are the Orient Company and the Peninsular and Oriental Company. The Orient Company tenders at 12s per lb for letters, and the fixed sura of £750 per voyage in lieu of charges on books and newspapers. The Peninsular and Orient Company declines to tender by weight, but is willing to undertake the required service for a subsidy of Ll 15,000 per annum, for a contact extending over seven years, or LHO,OOO per annum for a period of ten years.
