THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN v. LORD
SHEFFIELD’S TEAM
LONDON, May 19
The team of cricketers sent to England by the Melbourne Cricket Club, commeuced the season to-day at Sheffield Park, Sussex, by a match against the representative team chosen by Lord Sheffield. The match attracted a great deal of interest, and there was a verylarge attendance on the ground, including a number of visitors from London. The weather was unfavorable, play being interfered with by heavy rain, which fell at intervals during the day, and made the wicket somewhat heavy. The members of the Australian team were entertained at luncheon by Lord Sheffield. The following composed the Home team ;—W. G. Grace, Gloucester (captain) ; W. Newham, Sussex ; W. W. Head, Surrey ; W. Barnes, Notts; H. Phillips, Sussex; W. Bates, York; W. Flowers, Notts; W. Scotton, Notts; A. Shaw, Notts;] A. Shrewsbury, Notts; York. The visitors won the toss, and the Australian captain elected to send his men first to the wickets, Jones and Bruce being deputed to commence the proceedings. The latter, however, had only , made two ..when ho was bowled, and Scott joined Jones. Scott soon began to make play, but Joues, after being credited with 8, returned the ball into the bowler’s hands, and had to retire in favor of Gillen. Considering the deadnoss of tho wicket, this pair made a good stand, Gillen adding ten to the telegraph board before being bowled. Bonner now faced Scott, and the scoring for a time was very rapid, until Scott misjudged one which took tho bails, after lie had put together 23 by good sound cricket. Palmer partnered Bonnor, but was cleverly taken in the lijld when he had scored 0. Evans was the next man in, but be had only scored a couple when he was bowled. Blackball! and Bonner now got together, but the latter was run out while attempting to steal a risky run, having played a good innings for 1(1. Jarvis was the next man, and was run out after making 2. Garrett joined Blackham, who was soon afterwards caught, having contributed thirteen to the score. Spolforth coming last carried out his bat for four, his partner Garrett being caught for nine. A ll the wickets fell for 08. The Homo team were in good form, their bowling being very accurate, while the lidding was excellent, particularly in the matter of catches. Tho following is the full Australian score ;
