(Before His Worship the Mayor and Mr D. Williamson, J F.) AILEGED GAMBLING.
Robert Thilliag was charged with having played a gaope of chance on the Ashburton Racecourse on May 13.—Mr J. W. White appeared the accused.— Sergeant Felton applied for a remand as no witnesses were in attendance owing to the day being a Court holiday.—Mr White objected to a remand on account of the hardship it would entail on the accused, —The Bench decided to hear the case, but Sergeant Felton declining to pro cied the accused was discharged, it being arranged, however, that if the police had reason to believe they had a prima facie case the accused would bo again brougtit before the Court. DRUNKENNESS
A first offender for having been drunk in Wills street was fired 5i and costs, with the alternative of 12 hours’ imprisonment. ASSAULT. Oliver Wansey, charged with assaulting R. Patman, at the Somerset Hotel, on May 13, was fined L2 and costs, in default 8 days’ imprisonment. Oliver Wansey was also charged with having obtained L2 by false represents - tions from Mrs Patman, of the Somerset Hotel, on the 13 h inst, but, after evidence had been taken, the case was wsthrawn. The Court then rose.
