THE HOME RULE QUESTION

London, May 10.

In the House of Commons to day Mr Gladstone moved the second reading of a Bill embodying the Government proposals in regard to the establishment of local autonomy in Ireland. It the course ot an exhaustive speech he stated he was willing that the question of the retention oi the Irish members in the House of Commons should be fully considered in Committee. He suggested their appearance in debates dealing with questions of Imperial taxation, and that a joint English and Irish Committee should consider questions involving the interests of the Empire. The debate on the Horae rule question has be«n adjourned until Thursday, May 13th. Mr Chamberlain is believed not to be contented'with the concessions made by Mr Gladstone, and he will vote for the rejection of the measure, which it is generally expected will take place. THE IRISH QUESTION. The Marquis of riartington moved the rejection of the Home Kale Bill in the House of Commons last night. He characterised the proposals as injurious, and stated they would not satisfy the Home Rule party. The Marquis of Hartington proposed to meet the Irish difficulty by a gradual extension of the principles of self-government.
