The Ashburton Guardian. Magna Est Veritas Et Prevalebit. WEDNESDAY, MAY, 12, 1856. ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL.

It is with very much pleasure we tender our congratulations to the teaching staff of the Ashburton Borough School upon the character of the Inspector’s last report upon the results of their labors. Shortly after the last annual inspection we felt it our duty to critiicsesomewhat adversely thecondition of the school ; we pointed out that the educational attained by the children attending the institution was deplorably low, and we were not prepared to accept, without considerable reservation, the excuses advanced by the Headmaster. However, the report published in another part of this issue is, comparatively, so eminently satisfactory that we feel it due to Mr Kneen that we should join with the Board,of education and Committee in acknowledging the industry and ability that have brought about this happy change. At the time Mr Kneen assumed charge of the school every department of the institution was more or less disorganised. The Committee; had long been at variance with the Headmaster; the Headmaster had not worked amicably with his subordinates, and the children —as children always will—had taken the cue from the teachers and were rapidly drifting into the channels of studied indolence and open insubordination. Mr Kneen at once applied himself to the formidable task of substituting order for chaos, and we have indications that he has already made a fair measure of progress with the undertaking. The members of the Committee performed a graceful act when they conveyed an expression of their appreciation to the teaching staff; and we trust this well-merited recognition will assist in sustaining the zeal of tjiose teachers whose united labors are just now beginning to bear desirable fruit.
