Fifteen Thousand Socialists. Fifty Rioters Shot Dead. [RBUTKR’s TELEGRAMS —COPYRIGH ] (Received May 6, 11 45 a m ) New York, May 5 The labour riots in Chicago have now assumed a very serious phase. A meeting of Socialists, numbering fifteen thousand men, was held yesterday in ■ that city. The police authorities ordered the crowd to disperse, but the Socialists offered a stubborn resistance, throwing explosive bombs among the police, killing five and wounding many others. The police then fired upon the rioters, fifty of whom were shot dead, and a large number wounded. The greatest consternation prevails in the city, business being to a large extent at a standstill.
