TINWALD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
To the Editor. Sir, —Be letter signed Mr Oorrlgan of Ist inat. Being requested by Chairman to count the votes in connection with the adoption of the annual report, kindly allow me to state that there were 18 voted for and 9 against. The resolution as to who should vote for the election of new Committee was carried by the “ cast* ing vote of the Chairman.”—l am, etc., Jakes Gudsell. Tinwald, May|3rd, 1886.
Sib, —Kindly allow me to reply to Ur Corrigan’s letter of the Ist Instant. Had Mr Corrigan confined himself to the truth I should not hare troubled yon farther, as it is 1 feel compelled to reply to hia false statements. In the first place lam prepared to prove that the annual report was adopted by a majority of 8, not by the casting vote of Chairman, as stated by Mr Corrigan. Secondly, my duties on* fortunately did compel me to leave the meeting for a short time, as for being cornered Mr C. never made a greater mistake in hia life. I returned to the meeting and was prepared to show vouchers for every penny spent by the Committee, but the Chairman told me it was unnecessary, as matters were settled satisfactorily. In reference to my receiving a salary for my services as secretary, I stated In i’onrt that the Committee voted me a henna of L 5 at the end of the year, which has been done ever since there has bean a school at Tinwald. Well. Sir, at the meeting held on April 23rd the Committee wlahed to vote me this anm ont of incidentals, bat I declined to receive It. Also, in reference to items appearing in the of Smith in cash booh Is it not a well known fact, Sir, that cheques for small ' accounts in connection with school committees or any other society ate always drawn in the secretary or treasurer's name, and receipts taken for each item, which has been the course followed in this case. And, lastly, 1 can produce the names of my proposer and seconder who wished me to stand for re-elaotion, also the names of several gentlemen who called on me previous to the meeting asking me to stand, but I declined the honor. Regretting having to trouble yo a again in this matter.—l am, etc., J. W. SMITH. Tinwald, Mav 3sd, 1886. P.S.—I am rnibrmed that the son-in-law referred oin my letter has recently left the parternal roof of his father-in-law. J. W. P.
