The balance sheets of the Ashburton County Council and Rakaia Road Board and a number of local reports are crowded out of this issue and will appear in our next. A comet was visible in the western heavens from Ashburton after sunset last evening. The comet w»s a!s> observed from Christchurch, New Plymouth, Napier, Wellington, and other centres Mails for the Australian Colonies and United Kingdom, via Sydney, close at Auckland, per Tarawera, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the 4th. The cantata, “ Balshazz ir’s Feas‘,” postponed from last Thursday on account of the weather, is to be given to-morrow night at the Oddfellows' Hall. Given a line evening, a financial as well as a musical success should reward the effo-ts of our Wesleyan friends. A rehearsal takes place to-night at 8 o’clock in the Hail. The first meet for the season of the Ashburton hounds took place at Mr Foster’s farm on Saturday afternoon. The weather was wet and disagreetble, but about a dozen members of the Club, including the Deputy-M-ister, Messrs G Butherfnrd, W. R. Allan, J F. Foster, W. E. Bowyer, and C. Wroughtnn put in an appearance. Hares were very plentiful, and a number of short unsatisfactory runs took place before the hounds settled down to a real straight goer which carried the field over some nice hunting country until lost in the plantations. This concluded the afternoon’s sport and the field hutried back to town to secure dry clothing and shelter. The hounds were in excellent cmdition and for a first day worked fairly well.
In connection with the complaints mode at the annual meeting of ratepayers at Mount Some s on Saturday with regard to the collection of the census in that district, we are requested by the Superintendent Enumerator to state that the collector will proceed to Mount Somers to morrow and make a thorough investiga tion of the matter. It was understood that the collection in this part of the county was not complete, but there will be no fqrtber delay. The Taiaroa enquiry was resumed at Wellington to-day at 11 a.m., and at 2 p.m was further adjourned until Monday next. The Summerhayes Company will appear at the Town Hall this evening. | It will be noticed from a cablegram appearing in this issue that the New Zealand representative, Nelson, secured another victory at the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday, when he won the Place Handicap, of 300 sovs He suffered defeat in the Australian Joclny Club Plata at the hands of Matchlock (a New Zealand bred horse by Musket Yatterina, full brother to Fusilier.) The Handicap Steeplechase resulted in a dead heat between Goodwood and Scobehff, both by Slanderer (by Traducer—Gitana) a horse exported from New Zealand soma years ago. On ihe whole, New Zealand was very creditably represented at the meeting.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court, this morning, before Mr Thomas Bullock, J.P., William C oper was fined 10a and costs, with the alternative of 24 hour’s imprisonment, for drunkenness. For similar offences George MoAuley and Patrick McHanagh, alias P .tricc McGill, were each fined 10j and costs,, or 24 hour’s imprisonment'. Too rain fall at Alford Station during the month of April amounted to 470 inches; at Alfo.d Forest to 7 15 inches The annual meeting of the members cf the Ashburton Debating Society will be held at the Orange Hall this evening. An advertisement appearing in this issue announces that Mr 0. 0 Pooka has been appointed Returning Officer to conduct the first, elections of the Hakatere Town Board, which will take place at the Hampstead Schoolhouse, on Saturday, May 29. At the annual meeting of householders of the Seafield School District held on Tuesday evening, the following gentlemen were elected a school committee for
the ensuing ye w, Messrs Bruce, Ayrton, Richardson, E, Collison, O. Collison, Lunt and Redmayne. Ac a meeting of
the committee held after the householders meeting Mr Redmayne was elected Chairman. The Master, Mr Culverhonse, gave notice to terminate his engagement Several members of the Committee spoke in highly eulogistic terms of Mr Culverhouse’s past services, and a ievolution ex pressing appreciation of his ability as a teacher was carried unanimously.
The town district of Hakatere is gazetted. Messrs E.H Dobson, John Withell, and E. G. Wright were the only candidates nominated for election to the Coldstream Road Board on Saturday. These gentle men were declared dnly elected and a further election will be held for the selection of two other members. A cable message has been received from London announcing that the oontiact with the Syndicate far the construction of the East and West Coast and Nelson Railway has been assigned to the Company which is duly formed ; and that its prospectus was to appear in the London papers this morning.
The Premier addressed a large audience at Blenheim on Saturday evening, and received an enthusiastic reception. OWeJhave received from the Resident Secretary of the Australian Mutual Provident Society a copy of the thirtyseventh annu il report of the Society, the main features of which have already been published.
Mr Joseph Ivesa will meet his political supporters at the Templar Hall, Tinwald, this evening. The Customs revenue collected in the colony during April amounted to LIOB 631 as against L11L446 for the corresponding period of last year.
