STATE AID TO FARMERS.
The North Otago Tints oonol|l3ea an article dealing ■with the petition : recently addressed by Southland fermera totha Government preying lor State aid, ilk the following terms:—
But besides depending opon themselves and living simply and soberly, and dir* vying on their affairs with prudence and perseverance, the colonists of New need to realise that they are toe iwttch governed, and that all the real help: they can derive from Government moat come through the Government doing less and less, cutting down expenditure more and more, and leaving mo e and more of tha peoples* money in the peoples* own pockets. In a word, it Is only with lass Government taxation, and with more prndenoe and patience on their own part,* that the people of New Zealand need hops to reash the only desirable ends attainable through politioul or industrial hmm, But this simple troth appears to be lity»| apprehended, much less comprehended, by the people of the eolony. The more’s the pity for the people, though the fact mast be like life blood to the faJiwfefoi parasites and the political oracla-workece of the country.
