GOSPEL TEMPERANCE.
Last night a Gospel temperance meeting was held in the Library, Waterton, to inaugurate a Society for the district. Mr Dunn occupied the chair, and alter devotional exercises the chairman briefly stated the object of the gathering. Mr Edwin Antrobus then gave a reading, and the Rev W. Harris addressed the meeting. Mr Harris referred in appropriate terms to incidents that had come under bis personal notice, and bis remarks were listened to with the utmost attention. The next item was a song by Mr Dakers, the audience joining in the chorus. —Mr Antrobus next read several extracts bearing on the social position of total abstainers, the capacity of a confirmed tippler’s stomach, and the ludicrous mishaps to which a drunkard is liable. Mr Osborne sang “Up with the lark in the morning” in excellent style, and the chairman then made a few remarks bearing on the formation of the Society Mr Dunn concluded by calling on those present to join, and the invitation was largely responded to. The following officers of the new Society were appointed:—Secretary, Mr G Gilmour; Commitee, Messrs R. Gil* munr, W. Moses, Huston, and J. Bryant, Votes of thanks having beeu accorded to the performers and to Mr Harris, and a special vote to Mr Bond for franking the coach passage of the reverend lecturer, the meeting was closed with prayer.
