large, and the competition for the various lots offered was of an animated character. Some 6,100 bales were disposed of, buyers operating freely lor America for light-conditioned wools. Greasy merino sold up to nd per lb. Scoured wools brought as much as ißj£d, while for washed fleeces the highest price obtained was i4j£d. The High Commissioner Telegrams from Cooktown report that by the latest arrivals from New Guinea the news is brought that sir Peter Scratchley, High Commissioner, Is seriously ill of fever. A telegram from Townsville announces the death of Major-General Sir Peter Scratchley, High Commissioner for New Guinea- General Scratchley, who had been suffering from jungle fever for some ten days, was returning from New Guinea to Australia in the steamer Governor Blackwall, and died while the vessel was between Cooktown and Townsville. | (Received December 3, I p.m) Federal Enabling BUI.
