Assault. William Hanlan, workman on Falloon'a contract of the Pariroa railway, struck a fellow workman named Lamand Mathias on the head with a shovel, laying open hia temple and cheeir. Both men belong to two separate messing parties in the camp,, and water has to be fetched from a distance. Hanlan saw Mathias drinking some water which had been carried up by Hanian's party, and without warning Hanlan approached Mathias from behind and struck him in the face with the edge of bis shovel as he turned round to look who was coming. Mathias will probably recover. Hanlan was arrested. Gold Mining. Quartz giving payable analysis has found at Eaiapara. The Cambria mines, Thames, cleared op after a fortnight’s crashing for 416 r 'Z> gold. The mine has paid 1.4 J,825 in eleven months. Defence Officers. The Hinemua leaves Waitemata for Wellington this evening. Mr Ballance, Sir G. Whitmore, and Major Bodham are passengers.

Escapees. The prisoners Haskett and Harrison, who attempted to escape from the hard labor gang at Mount Eden, have been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment. Their previous sentences were 3 and 6 months respectively.

Supreme Court. Blenheim, To-day. Judge Richmond completes the civil sittings of Supreme Court to-dsy, and weaves for Wel'ington to-night. The sittings were occupied chiefly with esses of interference with water rights. Fire1< kidding, To-day. Messrs Bartholomew's steam saw were burned down at one this morning. Insured New Zealand Office fur L 2,000 ; estimated loss 15,000. Clergyman in Trouble. Oama&u, To-day. At the Resident Magistrates Court today the Rev Seih Smith was committed for trial at the Supreme Coart for criminal libel, the libel being contained in a document alleging immorality of sous of Mr O. G. Moore, late President of the Bine * Ribbon Army, whom Rev Seth Smith Jj and other members of the Committee forced from office. The prosecution waa brought at the instance of one of Mr Moore’s sons.
