WAKANUI ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wakanui Road Board was held at the Board's office, Moore street, to-day. Present— Messrs Bruce (chairman), Cole, Walsh, Lill, and White. correspondence. The following correspondence was read: —(1) Prom the Returning Officer, notifying the election of Mr W. W. White as member for No 1 Ward —(2) From W. • Badger, asking the Board to take copies of his Local Government Guide and Ratepayers Manual Resolved to procure one copy, and if found satisfactory to order five others. (3) From County Council, stating they would refund the Board for evgs and heads of small birds at the rate of "Is fid per 100. —Resolved that the Board supplement this by Is per 100.—(4) Prom School Committee asking for metaling of footpaths near Hampstead school.—Resolved to metal the south east footpath of Cambridge street.—(s) Prom Ashburton Borough Council, applying for refund of costs LI 5* incurred by ire Brigade in attending fire at Hampstead.—The Board were of opinion that little benefit resulted from the attendance of the fire brigades in the suburbs as there was no water supply. Resolved that Council be asked for particulars.—(6) From P. Madden, applying for the sum of L2 8a 6J, being damages sustained to his trap and dray through defective ford on Leadley’s read. Resolved to forward account to vlr Isaac Thompson, who caused the accident through neglect in not marking suitable ford, the Board having granted him permission to make it subject to approval, which had not been complied with It was also resolved that the Surveyor give Mr Thompson notice that if ford be not put in order within ten days it will be filled in.—(7) From ratepayers applying for formation of Hampton road. Resolved that tenders be called for next meeting —(8) From ratepayers, applying for formation of Buckley’s road from Saafiald to Seaview. Consideration deferred. FINANCE. A statement showing position of wards in the district on October 31, 1885, was laid on table which showed No 1 Ward had an overdraft of Lll6 9a Bd, with rates collectable to meat it of L 143 6a 3d ; No 2 Ward—Llo3 6s 81, with' rates collectable L 367 5s 7d ; 3 Ward—Ll27 Bs, with rates collectable L34S 6s 3d. It was resolved to make application to the Colonial Treasurer for subsidy under the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act. nuisance. Mr N. Fitzgerald waited on the Board and requested that a bridge might be erected over a drain fronting his property on the Station road. Mr Fitzgerald also called the Board’s attention to the state of this road between the creek and the hat.—Resolved, “ '"hat timber for bridge be given, Mr Fitzgerald to do carting and Iftbbr.,”—-The Surveyor was instructed to report on road, at next meeting, with estimate of cost of work.

The Surveyor’s report was read and adopted as follows :—“ (I) Beach road and outfall drain at McLeary’a : The portion of formation of this road has been completed; the grubbing up of gone in the ontfsll drain is almost completed.— (2) Oxford street, Hampstead: The works authorised to be done at last meeting are in progress.—(3) Wakanui School road : The lowering of grade in ford on this road has been done as directed at last meeting.—(4) Ford, Cochrane’s road: We have had the ford over the creek on this road repaired.—(s) Smith’s road : The gully on this road being dangerous after gorse had been cleared away, we have had it fenced off.—(6) Maintenance : The maintenance man is at work on roads in No 3 Ward.—(7) McLean and John street. Levels have been taken and tenders invited for the works which will be laid before you to-day.” TENDERS. Tenders were than opened for forming McLean and John street, and that of H. Hooper, at LI 3s per ehaln, accepted. COTTAGES. It was reported that one cottage bad been sold for Ll 6 and that offers had been made for the other, bat as it was tenanted it was decided to defer th i sale. insurance. It was resolved to insure the offices, etc, In the Mercantile Union Company for the same amount as hitherto, the members of the Board considering that -the company which had brought down the rates , deserved recognition.
