ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE
1 The uanal monthly meeting of the Ash--3 burton School Committee was held at the , Borough School last evening. Present—- ; Messrs D. Williamson (chairman), A. Orr, •’homas, Tucker, J. Orr, Collins and S. W. Alcorn. t MINUTES. The minntes of the last ordinary meet* ' iug having been read, Mr Thomas stated * that he had not left that meeting to : attend another (as recorded by the ; minutes), but had vacated his seat as he ; considered the Committee had no right to p consider the applications for the headmastership until the Examiners’ report ’ was received from the Board of EdooaI cion. —t he minutes were altered as suggested by Mr Thomas and then confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. ; The following correspondenee was read: —(1) Prom the Board of Education ac- . cepting the resignation of Mr B. Williamson as pupil teacher.—(2) From the same, forwarding eight daily attendai.ee registers fur the use of the school.—(3) From Mr B. Lowe, applying for appointment as pupil teacher. Consideration deferred.— (4) From the Board of Education, stating that they did not intend to alter the staff or salaries.— the Chairman explained that the second master having resigned, he thought it would have been a convenient time to reorganise the staff, and had communicated with the Board to that effect.—(6) From the Board of Education stating that the attendance at the 'Main school was not large enough to warrant the retention cf both Mias JDiok and a second master. An average attendance of 386 would be required.— the c hairman thought the attendance would improve in the summer. —(6) Erom the Mayor o Ashburton, enclosing copies of resolution pa-aed at a public meeting held on July 1 —Mr J. Orr moved, and Mr Collins se. oonded—“ That the letter lie on the table.”—Mr Thomas, after referring to the character of the public meeting, said it would be discourteous to the householders they represented to treat the letter with indifference. He moved as an amendment —“ That the communication be considered. ” —Mr Tucker seconded the amendment. On being put the amendment was lost, and the motion carried.— For the motion Messrs A. The headmasters monthly report was read as follows :—The schools re-opened after the winter holidays on Monday, 6th instant. The attendaioe during the week has been very low, owing to the severity of the weather, the numbers being: Main School, 1114.4; Side School, 63; total, 187 4; with a roll of 583. A number of new pupils have been admitted to-day ; the holidays wer* granted earlier than has been the custom since I came here. We are not entitled to any pupil teacher in place of Master B. Williamson, resigned Since the pupils are divided between the Main and Side Schools, more adult teachers are allowed by the regulations, and less pupil teachers. P.S. Miss Stuart complains of the bell being cracked and says it is almost useless. ATTENDANCE. It was resolved to communicate with MrW. C. Walker, in reference to the compulsory clauses of the Education Act; pointing out the difficulty of enforcing them, and asking the member for the district to procure soma amendment if possible. Accounts amounting to Ll2 2s 5d having been passed for payment, the Committee adjourned.
