WAKANUI ROAD DISTRICT.
A special meeting of the Wakanui Road Board was held to-day to consider applications to undertake the repairs of the various roads in the district and other necessary works Present—Messrs Bruce (Chairman), Walsh, Liil, Oole, and Zouoh. APPOINTMENT. It was resolved that Mr J. Kilgour’s application for employment as the Board’s caretaker at a salary of L2 per week be accepted. LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILLS. A prolongued discussion ensued on the proposals contained in the Local Government B 11s now before the House, and it was resolved—“ That this Board concurs with the proposals of the Local Bodies and Finance by some of the members that the giving of subsidies in the manner proposed was objectionable, as it would seem that the Government intend * collecting the full amount of the Property Tax, and refunding a certain amount to the Local Bodies as a subsidy ; whereas it would be preferable for the Local Body to collect (he
whole rate—hence the re solution was passed in order that the portion of the amount collected by Government would come back to the district. It was also resolved that the following suggestions having reference to local Government Bills be sent to the member representing! the district, asking him to urge the same in the House • That instead of taxes now collected by rhe Property Tax Department, County Councils and Road Boards, there ■h'm H.. be only one tax collected for general par- i poses, and that by the Road Board, or if there are no Road Boards, by the Ooanty „, Council, thus effecting a considerable saving in expense in collecting, etc., and insuring an economical expenditure of public moneys. A certain snm of this, according to the rateable value, to be eon* tributed to the General Government for police and other purposes necessary. That the Ooanty Ooanoil have power to levy special rates only for such purposes as bridges, water-races, etc. That the Council should be composed of the Chairmen of the Road Boards In the Ooanty. That the Chairman of the Council shoold be elected by the Council That Charitable Aid institutions should be under the control of the local bodies interested, and the cost of such should be borne by the bodies according to popn- ■ lation, and that reserves should be set apart to assist in, supporting these institutions The Board then adjourned.
