Windermere, 6th June, 1885. Gentlemen, —Year requisition, inviting me to stand for Wukanui, adds one more to the many tokens of goodwill whioh I have received from my fellow settlers in the County of Ashburton. Although 1 would much prefer at the present time to take no further burdens upon my shoulders, I feel that a requisition such as than whioh you have presented to me is almost of the uature of a command to discharge a public duty. I therefore have the honor to accept your invitation, and will take an early opportunity of addressing the electors. Having been amongst the first to invite Sir Julius Vogel to stand for Ashburton I shall, if returned, be prepared to support whatever measures he may bring forward in the interests of the Colony. I would support such measures of the Customs Tariff as would conduce to the establishment of any industry which gave promise of flourishing in the land ; but I would object to the imposition of heavy duties to stimulate enterprises which would collapse whenever that support might be withdrawn. I should vote for the purchase of the District Railways, at an equitable price, as between the shareholders of the railways and the ratepayers of the colony, and would advocate the repeal of the Act as a measure which should never have been placed upon the Statute Book. The Railway between Canterbury and the West Coast I regard as a work of Colonial importance, which the Government should take in hand immediately, should it not be taken up by a London Syndicate. Upon tho question of Federation, I am of opinoin that New Zealand should, as far as possible, retain independence of action, and that the questions to be determined by a Federal Council should be limited to defence against a common enemy, the exclusion of European criminals from the Islands of the South Seas, and other matters in which there could be no clashing of Australian with New Zealand interests I am, Gentlemen, Your very obedient Servant, EDWARD G.
