ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The usual monthly meeting of the Ashburton District School Committee was held at the B irougb School last evening. Present—Messrs D. Williamson (chairman). Thomas, Tucker, A. Orr, Alcorn, and Collins. COBKESPOHDBKO i. Correspondence was read from the Education Board in reply to Me Dempsey’s letter, stating that the Headmaster’s salary was compared on the average of the Main School only, the etteadanae at the Side School not being taken Into account. Also asking for an estimate of the work required on the Side School grounds. TKSDEB. A tender from Messrs Scaly Bros waa recived for levelling, ploughing and planting ground at the Side School, and planta screen of macrooarpa round the urinal for LB. Mr Alcorn moved that Messrs Sealya* tender be forwarded to the Board, with a recommendation from the Committee it.be accepted. Seconded by Mr Tnoker and carried. _ Mr J. Orr moved—That before plantting round urinals it would -be necessary to level the ground, and that a chain and a half in the width and the whole length of the large, playground bs levelled in addition to that required for planting ronni sides.—Seconded by Mr A. Orr and carried.
master’s report, Master’s report Wom mad as follows: I beg to submit my report on the schools. The numbers for the month ending gth June are as follows :
Examiners.—Messrs Edge and Malmhn wr. amined the school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10th, nth and t2th fasts. They completed their inspection at noon on Friday. The attendance daring the examination was good, the following being the number present in each class on Thursday
miscellaneous. The Chairmen reported haring had the works entrusted to him at last meeting carried oat. It was resolved to place wire netting in ventilators of infant school to beep oat the sparrows. PAYMENTS. Accounts amounting to L2O 5s were passed for payment. . HOLIDAYS. It was resolved that the school break up for midwinter holidays on Friday nest the 19th iost, and that it be notified by advertisement when it re-opens. HBADUASTKBSHIP. Mr Tucker moved that- the applications for the headmastership be held over till after the Board’s meeting.—Seconded by Mr Thomas. Mr Collins moved as an amendment that in consequence of the headmaster having been dismissed by the Board, the applications be considered at onoe. —Seconded Mr by J. Orr. On being pat the amendment was carried—For, Messrs A. Orr, J. Orr, Alooro, and Collins. Against, the Chair* man, Messrs Thomas and Tucker. Mr Thomas then left the room to attend another meeting. Twenty-eight applications for the head* mastership -were read, when, on the motion of Mr Alcorn, the meeting was adjourned till 7-30 p.m. on Thursday the 18th inat.
