ASHBURTON PARLIAMENTARY UNION.
Following the lead of other towns in New Zealand, the local Debating Society decided about a month ago to try the experiment of establishing a Parliamentary Union in Ashburton. The necessary arrangements have been made, and the opening ceremony is fixed for this evening, and, according to present indications, promises to pass off with a considerable amount of ecl&t. The Debating Society entrusted the task of forming the first Ministry to Mr J. A. Oaygill, and that gentleman has secured as colleagues Messrs D. H. Brown, B G. Crisp, and 0 Hogg The services of Mr E. G. Wright have been secured for performance of the functions of Governor, and that gentleman will to-night conduct the ceremony of formally opening the new Parliament by delivering the speech from rha Throne. The Society, since their decision to sit as a Parliamentary Union have received numerous and useful accessions to their ranKS, and the attendance of members and the public promises to be so large tonight that the Committee have decided to hold the opening ceremony in >t Stephen’s Schoolroom, their usual meeting place, the Orange Hrll, not being sufficiently large The Order Paper for this evening will be as follows : The Aoting-Olerk will take* the chair.at 8 pm. Entrance of the Governor, E. Q. Wright, Esq. Speech from the Throne. Adjournment fur ten minutes. Election of Speaker. Speaker takes the Chair
Election of Chairman of Committees. Election of Clerk. Motion for leave to introduce a Bill dealing with the constitution of the House—the Hon the Premier, Mr J. ACaygill. Debate on Address. Address-in-Reply, moved by the hon member for Kaiapoi, Mr W. H. Zouch. Seconded by the hon member for Inangahua, Mr H. W Felton. We are requested to state that a meeting of the Debating Society will be held at 7 30 p. m. for th» purpose of electing new members and allotting the constituencies All members or candidates for membership who have not already selected their constituencies are requested to attend the meeting, aud make their selections. A large portion of the schoolroom will be set apart as a “Strangers* Gallery” for the accommodation of the public.
