The Ashburton Guardian. Magna Est Veritas et Prevalebit THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1885

His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Major Eccles, Mr Pennefather, private Secretary, and Consuls Pearce, George and Toxward, opened Parliament at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Owing to the lateness of the hour at which the Governor’s Speech was delivered, we were unable to publish it in our first edition, but it will be re-printed in to-morrow’s issue for the perusal of our country subscribers. The usual monthly meeting of the St. John’s Lodge will be held at the Masonic Hall, Tancred street, this evening, at 7-30. Mr E. G. Wright’s Election Committee will meet at the Orange Hall this evening at 7.30. There was a good attendance of the Ashburton Guards at last night’s drill, and the company was put through a variety of exercises by Color-Sergeant Hayes. The usual weekly meeting of the Star of the East Lodge, I. O.G.T , was held at the Orange Hall last evening. Pour members were proposed and one initiated. The harmony of the evening was contributed by Bros. Bussell and Kingston, and Sister Kingston. The electoral roll for the various ridings of the County are now complete, and may be inspected at the places notified by advertisement. Objections to the rolls must be lodged in duplicate, one copy with the Clerk of the Court, Ashburton, and one with the Clerk of the County Council, not later than June. 20. The Wellington correspondent of the Press telegraphed last night—A wide difference of opinion still prevails as to the sessional prospects. Some assert that Ministers are too strong to be in any danger during the life of the existing Parliament, barring unforeseen contingencies. Others take a directly opposing view, and insist that the life of the Ministry hangs on a thread which any chance may snap. The most prsvalent view seems to be that the Government is not in serious peril at present froth outside attack, but is in grave danger of collapsing through spontaneous disin'egration, owing to the strong divergence of political views of individual Ministers, Sir Julius Vogel being an avowed Conservative and Mr Stout an ultra Radical, while Sir Julius Vogel and Mr Richardson were both colleagues of Major Atkinson in the first continuous Ministry which Sir Julius Vogel both founded and named; but Messrs Stout, Ballanoe and Larnaoh were in the Grey Administration, though the ! latter was a supporter of Major Atkinson in the last Parliament, and Mr Tole is a pure Greyite. So the matters are rather mixed, and there is no telling what new combination may ensue, especially as Sir Julius Vogel i« rumored to be desirous of assuming the Premiership. On the other hand non-Ministeriallsts are divided into two apparently inconoiliable sections, headed respectively by Sir George Grey and Major Atkinson, who at present are eminently unlikely to unite in assault on the Government, while neither by itself could hope to score a victory It is not expected, therefore, that any amendment will be moved to the Address in Reply, or that any direct motion of no confidence will be moved ; but it is possible the in dividual features of the Ministerial policy may be sharply assailed. There was a largo attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton Rinking Club in the Town Hall last evening At a meeting of the Oommitr.ee of the Club it was decided to abolish the fee for the membe'ship of ladies, and to issue complimentary tickets Gentleman visitors will be charged 1s for admission, and those desirous of risking will have to pay a further fee of one shilling The results of the Local Option polls for the Upper Ashburton, tsbhurton, Mount Somers and Mount Qntt licensing districts are advertised in this issue. The Feilding representative of the Press Association has telegraphed to us to-day with evident gusto—“ Sir William Fox baa sold his Westoa property to a publican at Bulls, named Dalziell, for L 15.000.” In some reminiscences of General Qordon is narrated an incident which show* the General’s care for outcast boys. He called the little vagabond out into the yard, and having poured a pail of hot water Into the trough, ha then and there stripped his young friend and gave him a thorough cleansing from head to foot.
