At the Lyttelton Readout Magistrate’s Court yesterday, eleven employees in the Railway Department at that place were charged with conspiring to defraud the Government. The principal, itisalleg d, is John Bough, who was timekeeper, and had to check the work done by the other men. The theory for the prosecution is that by a mutual arrangement between the timekeeper and the laborers, the latter were given credit and received pay meut for the work they had not performed, but which Hough certified they had done. In his opening remarks, Mr Joynt, who prosecuted, said that Bough had signed a written confession (which, of course, could only implicate himself), that he was in complicity with ether men, whose names he did not mention. The case against Hough and an employee named William Perceval was first heard, and after evidence had been taken both prisoners were committed for trial The Bench refused bail to Hough till the oases against the other men were investigated, The Government, it is alleged, have probably been defrauded of some hundreds of pounds.
