Sydney, May 29.

The water famine is the great and particular topic. All sorts of schemes are suggested for bringing water into Sydney, but none appear possible. Henry Hudson, of Hudson Bros, has a scheme for utilising the works already in progress and bringing water from the Pheasant’s Nest, at a cost not exceeding LOO,OOO. The supply is getting gradually smaller, and very great inconvenience is being experienced. Sickness is still vary prevalent, owing, it is believed, in great measure to impure water.

Archbishop Moran complained recently that ha declined an invitation to Government House on tte Queen’s birthday be cause he would give precedence to Bishop Barry. It appears that no such condition was ever made, but that the Archbishop sent his Secretary to ask where he was to sit, and at once raised the question of precedence. At the annual Consular dinner last night Mr Dailey made a good speech. Nahe’s patent blast furnace for copper smelting is likely soon to be applied in connection with the Nelson copper mines. It will probably soon be used in connection with one of the great copper mines in this colony. Seven men had sentence of death passed upon them fur a criminal assault on a woman seventy-two years of age. There is to be a grand demonstration on the return of the contingent about the 18th of June.

Colonel Sanltain has been deputed by the New Zealand Government to offer the congratulations of that colony. Business continues dull.

John Bennett, who was recently Injured by a buggy accident when coming from Brush Farm, ia slightly improving. Brisbane, May 29. Parliament will (probably meet on the 7th July.

The libel action Walker v Manager of the Daily Telegraph is proceeding. The plaintiff, who waa a reporter on the Age, accompanied an expedition to New Guinea. The Telegraph charged the plaintiff with inhumanity in dealing with the natives, end suppressing the particulars of the outrages in his report.
