Robert Graham, formerly Supermtendent of the Province of Auckland, and a colonist since 1843, died this morning of pleurisy end bronchitis. He had been ailing for a fortnight. Tauranga Election. Tadbanga, To-day Mr Kelly demanded a scrutiny on the grounds that a number of voters had personated others not present. The scrutiny was gone through yesterday, and resulted in three informal votes being discovered, leaving a majority tor Mr Sheehan of twelve instead of fifteen. The West Coast Natives. Mbw Plymouth, To-day. The settlers on the West Coast have requested Major Atkinson to call a meeting to discnss the aspect of sffairs m the district. Inspector Pardy has returned from the West Coast. He says the settlers have grounds for alarm, but ho has quieted their apprehensions, and has made arrangements for arresting the first man who commits any depredation or attempts to annoy the settlers In his house to house visit he says the settlers appeared to be doing well, and they assured him that if only freed from the anxiety the natives have caused them they would consider their lines had fallen in pleasant places. The opinion is gaining ground that if the Armed Constabulary in the district were replaced by a Civil Police force that the natives would cease to be troublesome, as the Maoris appear to have lost all respect for the Armed Constabulary. Argument in the second case Regina v Waring Taylor at the Appeal Court was concluded this morning. Judgment was reßonred) and this being the last case the Court adjourned until Friday, when judgment will be delivered. A Social Plague. »' ’ Chkistohxjech, To-day . r) At the Maaistrate’s Court to-day, Mr Beetham, R.M., in sentencing two women of ill-fame, said he was sorry to see that since the operation ot the Contagious Diseases Act had cessed in Christchurch there bad been a considerable increase in public solicitation of prostitution, which £ss not confined, ss formerly, to well-known prostitutes, but now included woods girls and married women. He considered that the sooner the Act was brought into operation again the better it would bo for everybody. Inquests- m , Ddnbdi.v, To-day. Two inquests were held yesterday. The fiest/onithe body of Richard Pope, killed by a fs-lk)/ stone from the new building of tbe'Kaw Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., on which deceased was working. The verdict was accidental death . the second was on the body of Frank Alexandor, 12 years of sge, who died in the Industrial School. The verdict was that the boy died from syncope, the effect of croup neon a feeble heart-
