* frilK PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Professor Tucksr. Auckland, To-day. Professor Tucker, of the Auckland University, has been offered the Professorship of Classes in the Melbourne University. Expenditure. The city expenditure for the ensuing twelve months is estimated at L 76,991. A Deputation. A deputation of persona opposed to the Contagious Diseases Act waited upon the City Council yesternight, requesting that a poll of citizens be taken regarding the operation of the Contagious Diseases Act. Superintendent Thompson reported that the Act had been beneficial in reducing disease, and had driven many women off the streets into domestic service. ISoliciting prostitution, onco so common, was now unknown. It was decided not to comply with the request of the deputation. Deputation.
Wanganui, To-day. Mr Ballance leaves for Wellington this afternoon, A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited upon him yes terday re railway tariff and river improvements. He promised to enquire into the former. Regarding the latter he saida party would be placed on the river in three weeks to clear out snags, as the Central Railway material will be sent by the river. To-day a deputation from the Small Farm Association waited on him, endeavoring to get the average acreage for allotments increased. Mr Ballance refused to increase the average.
Pre-Sessional. Boss, To-day. Mr Bevan addressed his constituents last night. He professed himself a staunch supporter of the present Ministry, and promised to continue his support so long as their policy remains unchanged. That policy, he said, was progress, and the colony was deriving benefits therefrom. Promoted. Dunedin, To-day. Mr Beattie, Superintendent of the Hillside Workshop, is promoted as Locomotive Superintendent, Foxton-Wellington railway.
