From cablegrams in this issue it will be seen that at a conference held between Earls Granville and Kimberley (for England), and M. |De Staal and M. Lessar (for Russia), the Afghan frontier question has been virtually settled.
The usnal fortnightly meeting of the Star of Ashburton Lodge, No 161, U. A. O. D., was held at the Arcade Chambers last evening. Being a summoned meeting, the attendance was unusually large. Five members were initiated. The Lodge resolved almost by an unanimous vote in favor of an United Grand Lodge for Canterbury, Otago, and Southland Other important business was considered, but not of a public nature. The harmony was contributed by Bros Bickford, Steel, Potter and Rattray. On Saturday last a mare, the property of Mr S. Wright, of Wakanui, and a saddle the property of Mr T. Walsh, of the same place, were stolen. Information was at once given to the police, and a man named Matthew Keane was arrested at Yaldhurat, yesterday, having the stolen property in his possession. Keane appeared at the Christchurch Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, and was remanded to appear at the Ashburton Court on Friday next. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning a woman named Emma Hewson was, on the testimony of Drs Leahy and Ross, committed to the Sunnyaide Lunatic Asylum.
A special meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council will be held at 7 o’clock this evening, to consider the annual Balance Sheet and Auditors’ Report. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Ashburton School Committee will be held at the Borough School this evening. The usual monthly sitting of the Ashburton District Court was held at the Courthouse yesterday evening. The proceedings, a report of which appears in another part of this issue, occupied rather less than fifteen minutes. With a view to redoes their Bank overdraft the Borough Council have determined to take stringent measures to secure the prompt payment of all outstanding rates.
A squad crill of the newly-formed Ashburton Honorary Rifla Corps was held last evening at Mr Zouch’s store, kindly lent for the occasion. There was a fair muster of those members of the Company who have never hid drill instruction, and two squads were formed and put through: their turnings, etc , by Mr Moss, a member of the new Company, and Colorsergeant Hayes, of the Ashburton Rifles, who kindly volunteered his services for the occasion. Both instructors expressed themselves as quite satisfied with the result.
A charge against William Power, of the Royal Hotel, of having supplied intoxicating drinks to other than a bond fide traveller, on Sunday last, was heard at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. Evidence having been taken the charge was dismissed, the Magistrate remarking that it was unsupported. On the suggestion of the Magistrate an information was laid against a witness named James Patterson for having falsely represented himsoJ to Mr Power as a traveller.
The All-Nations Baziar, held in aid of the funds of the Christchurch Convent, has been a great success. It was open ten days, and tpproximately L 1,600 have been realised
