At the inquest at the Lunatic Asylum on the body of Joseph Thompson, the warder killed by the patient Charles Trewhelar yesterday, the jury returned a verdict that deceased was killed by Trowhelar, who was not responsible for his actions ; also, that no blame was attach-' able to the attendants of the Asylum. Deceased has a sister named Singleton, a resident at Christchurch.

The Premier left to-day for the War kato.

The protest arising out of the walking contest was decided by the judge awarding the match to M.‘Clure on the ground that Raynor broke when rounding the corner of the track. Raynor immediately served notice from his aolicitora upon the stakeholder, warning him not to pay over the stakes of LIOO and balance of door money until the matter was decided in Court. Wellington.

In the Supreme Court, the action, Andrew Young and wife v Nicholas Reid and wife, has been discontinued. This was a suit for damages arising out of slanderous statements alleged to have been circulated by Mrs Reid against Mr and Mrs Young. Defendants have now pleaded that they have inspected documentary evidence of* Mr and Mrs Young’s marriage, ahd are convinced that the statement made is wholly and absolutely without foundation and if, in the course of conversation, either defendant repealed the slander, they regret the annoyance and trouble it has occasioned the plaintiffs. Nothing further has been heard of the man-of-war reported in Cook Strait yesterday afternoon, and it is thought that the information received by Government was incorrect.

The Slander c ise, Goldsmith v Anderson, still occupies the Supreme Court. In the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Jus tice Richmond expressed the opinion thal the owning of racehorsei was not a recog nised means of livelihood.

At the Police Court to-day the charges against a batch of prisoners for insubordination and making untrue complaints against the warders on the works at the Heads, were gone into. One, who had made a false complaint that a warder had gone to sleep on duty, had 40 marks forfeited, and Stewart M‘oomb, who I.ad falsely charged three warders with illtreating him so as to render him insensible, got a week on bread and water. The charges against 17 others were remanded till to morrow.

Professor Brown gave a lecture last night on Technical Education, under the auspices of the New Zealand Manufac-' turers’ Association. An interesting discussion, in which school teachers and others took part’, followed. Mr W. Prince, the Union Company’s Electrician, has been appointed by the Government to carry out the torpedo arrangements at Port Chalmers.
