The Government have received a cablegram from the Agent-General, stating that a conflict has taken place between the Russian and Afghan troops in the vicinity of Moorghab River on March 28. The Afghans suffered severe loss. Volunteers and Defence. The Government have received a reply from Colonel Hewett. definiiely accepting the position of Commander of the New Zealand Volunteers. It is understood that he will leave for New Zealand immediately. It has been decided to connect the defence works with town by telephone. School Attendance. Dunedin, To-day. The average school attendance in Otago for last quarter was 18,550. The highest attendance under the provincial scheme being 1,174. Aquatic. Invebcabgill, To-day, In tbs four-oared boat race between Dunedin and Invercargill, the formet won by a length and a quarter.
