The Auckland Agricultural and Mercantile Company have declared a dividend of 8 per cent. The Hon J Bryce is now in Auckland to give evidence before the Commission which has been appointed to take evidence in the libel case, Bryce versus Rusden. Mr F. D. Fenton and the Hon J. Tole have been appointed Commissioners to act on behalf of Mr Ruaden, and Mr Bryce has appointed Messrs James Russell aud 4. B. Whitaker. The post and telegraph office at Pukekohe railway station was broken into last night, and an unsuccessful attempt was made to get at the contents of the safe. Mr Napier, counsel for Sheehan, accused of the Caatletown-Roche murders, ha s instructed a leading solicitor to defend the prisoner at Cork Assizes. Detective Walker and Sergeant Downing leave with the prisoner. They expect to catch the Ruapehu. The Government Insurance Board have purchased Shera Brothers’ promises in Queen street, with a frontage of 40£t, for L 19,000. Wellington. Government has received a cable message from the Agent-General in connection'with the Federation Enabling Bill. The message stated that the Agents-Gene-ral had had an interview with Lord Derby, and had decided as follows : Clause 3 of the Bill will probably be reinstated, with amendments ; clause 5, amendment ; Members of Council will only be increased at the request of the Legislature ; cl iusa 15, sub-section similarly amended; clause 26, the second amendment relating to expenses to be omitted ; clause 30 to be retained. The Island Bay Park Company has be'en voluntarily wound up, and another Com pany is to be formed, to be called the Island Bay Park Racing and Coursing Company, Limited, with a capital of L 20,000, in LI shares.
