The Ashburton Guardian. Magna Est Veritas et Prevalebit TUESDAY, MARCH 17, 1885. The New Zealand Industrial Exhibition

The New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, which it is proposed to open in Wellington on 31st August next, has not yet attracted much attention from the Ashburton, public. Probably but a very small number of the residents in this locality have taken the trouble to acquaint themselves with the character or objects of the Exhibition, and as a result of this apathy inly one solitary application for space—that of the Ashburton Cheese and Butter Factory—has been made from the district. But the Executive of the Exhibition have determined to extend the time for receiving applications until the 31st instant, and we hope that active steps will, in the meantime, be taken to secure a thoroughly representative display from this locality. We note from the synopsis published with the official programme the following classes, which should not, in the general interests of the district, be allowed to close without entries from Ashburton, viz. . (3) agricultural products not used for food, (5) aerated waters, (7) leather and skins, (22) harness and saddlery, (37) boots and shoes, (42) cereals, farinaceous products and products derived from them (43)> bread and pastry, (44) milk, butter, cheese and eggs, (45) preserved meats (48), fermented drinks. All these and several other classes should receive exhibits from Ashburton, while the Industrial Home Branch offers a field for industries developed with small expenditure within the schools and homes.of the colony, such as:—Works of art, painting, drawing, sculpture, carving, artj furniture, plain and art needlework, dressmaking, millinery, upholstering, tapestry, embroidery, knitting, netting, crochet, lace, spinning, weaving, strawwork and plaiting. . All expenses of transport after the exhibits are received by the local Committees, will be undertaken by the Government, and gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to exhibits of special merit. It will be seen that the Government on their part have offered facility and inducement, and it will not add to the favorable repute of this important agricultural district if the first of the proposed series of exhibitions is allowed to take place without a creditable display of our products and industries.
