The Ashburton Guardian. Est Veritas et Prbvalebit WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 1885.
At the Resident, Magistrate’s Court this morning, M>' H. 0. S. Baldeley, R.M., dealt wuh the following cases. Samuel Alexander, charged with having been drunk and having behaved in a riotous manner in the Somerset Hotel yesterday, was fined 60s and costs with the alternative of 14 days’ imprisonment. —The same offender was further charged with resisting Constable Smart in the exception of his duty, and was fined 40a and costs with the alternative of 5 days’ imprisonment.—A first offender for drunkenness was fined 5s and costs, with the alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Permanent Building and Investment Soi oiety will be held at the Arcade Chambers, Burnett street, on Wednesday, 25th March, at 3 p. m. The business which will come before the meeting is advertised in another part of this issue. The Rev. Father Chaatagnon will celebrate mass at Methven on Sunday next, at 10.30 a. m., and Vespers at Ashburton at 7p m, Tuesday next being the feast of St Patrick, mass will be celebrated at Ashburton at 10 a.m., and on Sunday 23rd inst. there will he mass at Rakaia The Ashhmton District School Committee have advertised their intention to enforce the compulsory clauses of the Education Act. It appears from their discussion in respect to this matter last night that a number of children are at present taken from school to assist in harvest operations. Mr Tucker stated that he knew of one case in which a wife had gone into the country to cook for her husband, engaged in harvest operations, and had been compelled to take her five children with her.
At the District Court this morning a witness found some difficulty in defining the condition of a man immediately preceding drunkenness. The witness submitted “state of jollification,” “not drunk,” and other well-known definitions of a partially “ foo ” man. but a novel and expressive suggestion by the Judge—- “ slightly sober ” —was accepted with evident appreciation of its humor. At the District Court this morning the civil case Friedlander Bros v Coffey and Brick, was adjourned on the application of the counsel for the defendants. The application was opposed by counsel on the other side, and during the argument that fensued some particulars were adduced which give promise of the case proving of more than ordiniry interest. It is now set down for hearing on Friday, April 10th.
Miss Janet Dick has been recommended to the North Canterbury Board of education to fill the position on the staff of the Borough School vacated by Mr Gilfaoy. Mr Wa'ker, M. H. R., recently forwarded a petition from a number of residences in this county to the Minister of Justice, pray inti that the sentence passed upon John Gilmour, a bankru, t. for fraudulent concealment of property from the Deputy Official Assijnee might be commuted. While in Wellington last week, Mr Walker made enquiries in reference to the facts of the petition, and ascertained that the Cabinet had not yet had time to deal with it. It will be considered in the course of a few days. An appeal by William Rowse against the Resident Magistrate's decision in a recent case under the Licensing Act, occupied the District Court for some hours to-day. ahe evidence adduced was similar to that published in connection with the hearing in the lower Court, although two important witnesses for the prosecution were able to fix more precisely the hours at which they were supplied with liquor and left the house. The conviction in the lower Court was quashed. A report appears in another column. The Ashburton District School Committee met at the Borough school last evening. After the disposal of the usual routine business the members resolved themselves into committee to consider a communication received from the Board of Education in respect to the headmaster. On resuming, the Chairman reported that the Committee had determined to coincide with a resolution passed by the Board to the effect that the headmaster’s engagement should be terminated by three months’ notice. We understand that the
proceedings in committee were of a most animated character, and that the ultimate decision was not a unanimous one. A full report of the public proceedings appears elsewhere. In accordance with a request of His Worship the Mayor, the places of business in Ashburton were closed between noon and 2 p.m. to-day as a mark of respect to the late General Gordon. Sir Julius Vogel arrived in Christchurch at noon to-day. In accordance with his express wish there was no public reception.
Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin, the popular totalisator proprietors, advertise the Globe Consultation Company in another column of this issue. We have no doubt that this new venture of the genial promoters will be largely patronised. The experiments made during tfye past year in the cultivation of sugar beets for the new sugar factory at Lavenham, established by Messrs Bolton and partners, seem to have fairly answered the anticipations formed. Professor A. H. Church, in his report to the company, points out that last year’s drought was against large crops, audyet on a large proportion of the farms the yield was about 12 tons per acre, while the average quantity of sugar in the roots nearly reached 13 per cent, corresponding to a production of 1£ tons of crystaliisable sugar per acre. Professor Church gives it as his opinion that under normal conditions sugar-beet must pay better than wheat at present prices, a matter which should receive the serious consideration of the agriculturist ; but it ia with this proviso, that growers must cease to treat sugar-beet as a fallow crop and devote the best land and all their care to its cultivation. The distressed farmer looking about for new openings for his energy should not overlook this one.— P.M. Budget.

Another unfortunate.-—Again we must aV«IY the attention of our readers to the fact that a stock of Clothing and General Drapery, in the estate of Dennis O’Connell, trading in Lyttelton and Cristchurch, now bankrupt, was purchased by H. E. May & Co., of the Hall, High street, for or only a little over one-third of its value. H. E. M. and Co. are now selling it at half the marked price, which surely ought to secure a speedy clearance.
