[per •press association.] A Maori Dispute. , t Aucklawp, -Last Fight. 1 An amusing dispute has arisen amongst the Kingites as to who shall have the honor of turning the first sod of the railway. Wahanni was first selected, but the owners of land where the railway commences have concluded that it will infringe their mana. Therefore they object, and assert that one of their number shall turn the first sod. Bill of Indemnity. Mr Stuart,. Premier of New South Wales, says that a Government measure to be introduced at the forthcoming meeting of the New South Wales Parliament, will be a Bill of indemnity in relation to the raising and despatch of the Soudan Contingent. He does not return to Sydney till April. , Fire* Wanganui, Last night. Mr Finnan’s stables at Aratnoho were burnt down this afternoon ; loss, LICO. There wore insurances, but the amount, and in what offices, has not been ascertained. Accident. Wellington, Last night. A lad named Billows was run over by a lorrie this afternoon, and had his leg smashed, necessitating amputation. The Colonial Treasurer. Young’s body was recovered yesterday afternoon in a 22ft bole, in the Pelorua river. The inquest was held last night at Havelock, and 'resulted in a verdict of " Accidentally drowned,” with a rider that “ the jury urge on the Government the necessity of the completion of the Pelorns bridge as early as possible, and the proper authoritiea are requested to open the track to the upper ford.” The funeral will take place at Blenheim tomorrow. The ford where the accident happened is very rough, and the ap preaches ate bad, and no lights at night are kept burning on the unfinished bridge. William Young, the deceased, was single, aged 27, a nati e of England, and had no relatives in the colony. Shipping. Port Chalmers, To-day. Arrived Excelsior, 35 days from Mauritius, with 250 tons sugar. A Horsewhipping Case. Dunedin, Last Night. A fracas in Rattray street this afternoon, between a well-known insurance canvasser and a professional gentleman, who occupies a prominent position in musical caused considerable ex- . citement among those who happened to be in the neighborhood at the time. The assailant, who is a man of exceedingly tall stature, administered a severe horsewhipping to the musican, who, on the other hand, is of very small build. Domestic matters are said to be the cause of the affair. The criminal statistics for 1884 show a decrease of 218 in the number of cases of drunkenness. Oanght at Last. About a dozen charges of sly prog sell- - ing are to come before the Police Court on Thursday against shanty-keepers at Nenthorn, on the Otago Central railway line. Death of a Teacher. Mr A. Montgomery, head of the teaching staff in the Normal School, and a very well-known Otago teacher, died today of heart disease. Embezzlement. Dunedin, To-day. A Trial Trip. Invercargill, Last Night. The Bluff Harbor Board invited a largo number of citizens to join in the trial trip of the nef tog Awarna to-day.
