Compensation. Auckland, Last Night. The Government have declined to recognise the Harbor Board’s claim f t L 45,000 compensation in respect of the appropriation for Government purposes of the Mechanics Bay intake. Promotion. . , The Defence Minister has promoted 'i first-class Sergeant McGovern to be Ser-geant-Major of the third class, and i srgeant Gillies to be second class Sergeant, hi recognition of services in connection with Winiata’s arrest. Licensing Bench. At the City South Licensing Bench, the Chairman stated that the Committees would have to put down Sunday trading themselves, as the police were powerless to suppress vice. Superintendent Thomsons severely blamed the Bench for dismissing oases, even when publican’s pleaded guilty. Enquiry. Wellington, Last mght._ An enquiry is to be held into the circumstances connected with the blood poisoning cases at the Hospital on Dr Grabham’s return from Auckland. The Rifle Competition. The Government decided not to send the Hinemoa to Auckland for the shooting representatives, as most of the competitors have already left there. It is expected that 200 volunteers will compete at the Rifle Association meeting next week. Half of the men go under canvas. -
Sheehan. Sergeant Denny, of the Royal Irish Constabulary, was a passenger to Wellington by the Kimntaka, which arrived from London to-day. The Sergeant comes out to New Zeeland for the purpose'of taking back with him the man Sheehan, who has been arrested in Auckland on a charge of having murdered some of his relatives in Ireland several years ago. Sergeant Denny left for Auckland by the Arawata this evening.
Detective Brown. It is rumored that Chief Detective Brown has been promoted to the rank of Detective Inspector. Parliament. Parliament is to be farther prorogued until April, when the Government will decide the date on which to call hon mem* beta together for the despatch of business. iHon Mr BaUance. The Hon Mr Ballance will shortly leave lor-Sontb on business connected with the Lands; Department. It is not improbable ' that he may accompany Sir Jalius Vogel to. Christchurch. While in the South Mr Balhmoe will endeavor to establish a Small Farms Settlement. Six of the As* sociations of 100 members each are already in existence in Wellington and Napier districts.
Native Affairs. Inconsequence of native affairs on the Waii| Coast being veiy quiet, the Constabulary camp has been broken up, and the men stationed at various posts along the coast. \ An Ungrateful Scoundrel. Timahu, To-day. Patrick Ryan, of fraudulent taaktup’cy notoriety, was to-day committed for trial on three charges of burglary and larceny from a dwelling. A.ll three offences were committed at the same house, the first two on March 16,1884, and the last on January 31,1885, and the victims of all three were the only persons who had extended a hand to him, when he came over from Melbourne in custody nearly two year ago. They had .been his bails* men on that occasion, and on his subsequent release from gaol they allowed him to visit their house and were kind to him. In their absence at work he hod forcibly entered the house and taken a quantity of their jewellery, cloth’lng, money, eta These were only discovered on February 18 of the present year'stowed away, in Ryan’s house, with a quantity of blankets, cricketing and lawn tennis clothing, horse covers, knives, spoons, etc- A week ago accused was convicted and summarily dealt with on various charges of stealing lawn tennis clothing, and he is now under-going 18 months’ imprisonment for these offences. Death of an old Resident. Dunedin, To-day. William Reid, an old resident at Waikonaitl, died of heart disease last night,
