[PBK PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 Alleged Bribery. Auckland, Yesterday At the Cambridge Court this morning. ’ before Chief Judge Macdonald, the matter of the alleged bribery of Assessor Waata Tlpajwas gone into at considerable length. Those concerned excepting Tipa were in Court. Captain Blake produced two receipts signed by Tipa. One was dated Kihikihl, May 10th, 1874, for L2B received from Moon as loan, which the receipt said was to be repaid, and the other was dated Ngarukawahia, 12th November, 1884, for L 25 cash lent. These were the only receipts he had shown Symonds. One of the same had been repaid, and the other was expected to be repaid ialso. He considered Harry Symonds had abused bis confidence in this matter. The Court impounded the two receipts. His Honor said the matter was one of criminal concern, and cautioned those interested against making statements unnecessarily. After a somewhat personal discussion the Court adjourned. Conscience Money. Sir Julius Ycgel has received privately A remittance of Ll 7 10a, which may be described as conscience money, inasmuch as It represents an amount of taxes which the sender was entitled to pay, but by some means escaped from paying. Stricken ■ with remorte he has remitted the money under the name of “ M,” with the request that payment may be made as public as possible throughout the colony, in order that it may set as an incentive to other individuals possessed of ‘ ‘ conscience ” to make up their pecuniary shortcomings* , Steam Service. A deputation waited upon Sir J. Vogel this morning to request that the time for receiving tenders for the steam service between Tonga, Samoa ; and this colony might be postponed from 31at March to 31st May, as arrangements were being made in this city to secure steamers suitable for this service, and if a little longer time were allowed, the number of tenders would be larger. Sir Julias replied that tenders have already been called, and the time conld not now be altered. He hoped to see the service inaugurated by June lit. „ :

The cargo consisted of 18,000 feet of bulk and sawn timber, shipped by Messrs Stone Brothers, of Auckland, and consigned to Messrs Stone and Co., Sydney. (The cargo was insured for L 590 in the New Zealand office.

Gold. Wasoasui, Yesterday. Mr Albert Beard, the special reporter of the Chronicle, who has had large experience in gold mining, visited the locality of the supposed gold disodkery on Tokomaco block, about fifteen miles by river from Wanganui He reports the find as floating quartz, containing good gold, and a reef is supposed to exist in the immediate vicinity.

Artesian WaterThe trial of the artesian well for testing the underground supply for town is down 60£t of 80ft contracted for. Groat difficulty is experienced in keeping the water down. Mill Burnt. INVERCARGILL, To-day. Mr Black’s dour mill, at Winton, was burned down last night. The fire started at one of the walls of the building close to where oat shellings were kept, and it is believed to be the work of an incendiary. A man employed as baker was sleeping up stairs, and had only time to escape partially dressed, dropping from an upstairs door. There was no water, and 'nothing could bo done to save the mill. Nothing was saved. The building was insured for LBOO in the South British, The estimated loss is about LI,OOO above that.
