MURDER.

Auckland, To-day. Yesterday a settler at Pokeno, named Robert Prendergast, shot his wife through the heart in their house. After committing the crime he went to Mercer and got drunk, and told several people he had shot bis wife, but he was not believed as he made other incoherent statements, and was in the Lunatic Asylum two yean ago. The murder was committed about midday, and was not discovered till the evening, when two sons went home and found the dead body of their mother on the kitchen floor. Prendergast was arrested last,

night, and said, “ Oh, yes, I did it j you’ll get the pistol on the shelf.” A large horse-pistol, which had recently been discharged, was found as stated. The accused and his victim were both about sixty years of age.
